U2’s “One”: more than one meaning?

“One” by U2 must surely be one of the most misunderstood lyrics out there at the moment. The recent re-release with Mary J. Blige has re-launched interest in the track, first included on the remarkable “Achtung Baby” album in 1991. The misunderstanding is a classic one: people largely base their opinions of a song on the chorus. This was true with Springsteen’s “Born in the USA” and more recently James Blunt’s “You’re Beautiful”. In the case of “One”, the difference between the chorus and verse are stark.
