Oscar and Muslims irate at lyrics
Lyrics have been the subject of more debate this week. The Oscars opened the proceedings when “It’s Hard to be a Pimp Out Here” from “Hustle and Flow” won the Best Original Song. Many people questioned whether it wasn’t making prostitution glamorous. But the truth is that the song won simply as it was the best in its category. I can’t link to the lyrics, but they are not as vacuous as some people think.
Over in the Mediterranean island of Sebta (Ceuta in Spanish), the Muslim community is a little irate. The tiny island lies off the coast of Morocco but is part of Spain. Community relations are generally good. But when a song that won a competition was discovered to call Muslims “animals”‘ and “bastards”, they were justifiably determined to make a point of it. So legal proceedings have been started against the organisers under Spain’s anti-racist laws. I haven’t read the lyrics. My source for this is Islam Online.
